A History of London
1. London is an extremely old city, it is more than twenty centuries old.
When the Romans came to Britain in the first century of our era London was a
small village. They built many roads and buildings and even now you can see
the Roman Wall that the Romans built in the second century. Soon London
became a Roman stronghold and а trading centre. Later it became the largest
city of England.
2. In the middle ages, London was a very rich and independent city, even
with its own army. Its citizens supported the king of England or not according
to their own decision. When the king came from Westminster where he
generally lived to the city of London the Lord Mayor of London met him at the
gates and presented him with the keys of the city. This ceremony still takes
place when the present monarch of Britain passes through the City on official
business, for example opening of Parliament.
3. The City of London nowadays contains mostly financial institutions,
business and newspaper offices, banks etc. The City of London became the heart
of the business life of Great Britain and plays an important part in the financial
and economic life of the world. Very few people live there, but a lot of men and
women come every morning to their work places there. Most of them work for
the financial sector of the British economy.

London Attractions
1.London is more than twenty centuries old and there are a lot of
interesting buildings and sights in it. The majority of them are in the West End,
Westminster and the City. The West End of London is famous for its beautiful
monuments and palaces, fine parks fashionable shopping centers and expensive
hotels.
2.There are many places of interest in London. One of them is Trafalgar
Square with the Nelson’s monument and the National Gallery with its rich
collection of European paintings. Buckingham Palace is the royal residence.
Westminster Abbey is one of the beautiful buildings in London. It contains the
memorials of many prominent citizens of Britain. Close to Westminster Abbey
are the Houses of Parliament with probably the most famous clock tower and
tower clock, Big Ben.
3.But the most attractive sights of London are the British Museum and
St.Paul Cathedral. A lot of people from Britain and all over the world come
every year to visit these fine sights. The British Museum contains the richest
collection of the Greek ancient art.
4.As London is on the banks of the river Thames there is a number of
bridges in London. The most famous of them are the Tower Bridge, Waterloo
Bridge and Westminster Bridge. There is another famous English city on the
banks of this river. This is Windsor. There is a private castle of the British
monarch there.

London
1. London is the capital of Great Britain, its political, economic and
cultural centre. The population in London is about twelve million people.
London is the biggest city in Europe. It lies on the banks of the river Thames,
not far from its mouth. The river Thames flows from west to east and divides the
city into northern and southern parts. But there is another division: the City,
Westminster, the West End end the East End.
2. The City is a small part of London. It is the historic centre of London.
But it is the financial and business centre of the country. There are a lot of banks
there. When Britain was a colonial power it accumulated great wealth. Due to its
geographical position London became one of the most important ports in Europe
and profited from trade with foreign countries.
3. Westminster is the administrative centre of London. The Houses of
Parliament are here. The West End is the part of the city where the rich people
live. The East End is the poorest part of the capital.
4. London is also the centre of the country’s cultural life. Thhere are a lot
of museums and picture galleries there. The National gallery houses a priceless
collection of paintings from many European countries. The British Museum is
one of the most famous museums of the world and the largest library in Britain.

Lise Meitner
1. In 1938, an Austrian physicist named Lise Meitner announced the splitting of the atom in the laboratory. That announcement confirmed once again the beginning of the Atomic Age. At that time Lise Meitner was one of the few persons in the world who had a thorough understanding of atomic energy and the uses which could be made of this great power.
2. Lise Meitner, the daughter of a lawyer, was born in Vienna in 1878. She grew interested in science when she read of the Curies’s discovery of radium. The example of Marie Curie showed that a woman was able to achieve something in science. Lise Meitner became the first woman in the history of the University of Vienna who earned her doctorate in physics.
3. In 1906 she went to the University of Berlin to continue her studies by attending the theoretical lectures of Max Planck and by doing experimental work. There she began her research in the new field of radioactivity. She focused her attention on the behaviour of beta radiation from radioactive elements, experimenting with the primitive methods then available for measuring and analyzing radioactivity. Meitner's work in the 1920s and early 1930s emphasized the physical aspects of radioactivity.
4. In 1938 she left Germany for Sweden. Lise Meitner declined to work on the development of the atom bomb remaining in Sweden throughout the war. She was concerned with the properties of new radioactive isotopes, produced by the cyclotron. Her career was illustrious and productive (she published more than 135 scientific papers), but throughout her life she remained a shy person, with a deep interest in music. Her devotion to science had been total. She never married. In 1960 she moved to Cambridge, England, where she died in 1968.

Economic progress
1. Approximately half the Russia’s territory is economically well
developed. The nearest task is to develop the other half in a planned manner,
that is, the tundra in Siberia, the Far East. Much has already been done in these
lands. But no matter what projects are to be built manpower is always the No. 1
problem.
2. Manpower has to be invited from the more developed areas. Can one
induce the population from the industrialized zone move to the areas needing
development? Apart from investments, our society is vitally interested in
making migration, which is necessary for developing new territories.
3. Our economy needs methods capable of attracting investments in order
to revitalise entire branches of our economy. Large sums are to be spent on
attracting a worker to move and to settle at a new place of work where new
production processes can be started. The securing of investments and manpower
resources for the new development are the main tasks of today.
4. The need to launch projects in harsh conditions calls for special
attention not only to the professional aspect, but also to the physical and moral
qualities of the workers. This makes it necessary to place new criteria on the
selection of people who want to come to new construction sites. They should be
judged by their physical and intellectual abilities, the ability to perform definite
functions, capability to adapt to the new conditions of life and work, their
psychological features, etc.
5. These demands are fulfilled best of all when the workers are transferred
to the projects in an organized way within production collectives, formed earlier
and having work experience. ВАМ proved that such an approach is effective.
The stability of such collectives has a favourable influence not only on the
activities of the enterprises themselves, but on the entire system of regional
manpower resources.

En France nous pouvons parler de quatre types de tourisme :
Le tourisme culturel regroupe la majorité des buts touristiques. Son objectif est de faire découvrir des aspects du patrimoine culturel d'une destination : la géographie, l'histoire, l'industrie, la tradition gastronomique, les musées, les monuments, les fêtes...

Dans notre série « Connaissez-vous la France ? », nous vous présenterons aujourd'hui Balaruc-les-Bains et sa région. Il y a bien longtemps, l'étang de Thau s'ouvrait largement sur la mer entre le volcan d'Agde et l'île de Sète. Aujourd'hui, la presqu'île de Balaruc s'avance sur les eaux de l'étang séparées de la Méditerranée par une mince bande de sable. Ce sont les Romains qui font de Balaruc une station thermale. Sa vocation ne cesse de grandir, et la station accueille chaque année de très nombreux curistes. L'utilisation des sources d'eau chaude jaillissant d'une grande profondeur et des boues provenant d'un milieu marin fait de Balaruc une station thermale unique, spécialisée dans le traitement des rhumatismes...

1. A Russian name appeared in 1964 on the honorary board of science at Bridgeport University, USA: Mendelyeev was added to the list of the greatest geniuses - Euclid, Archimedes, Copernicus, Galilei, Newton and Lavoisier. This was a recognition of D.I. Mendelyeev as the greatest chemist of the world.
2. D.I. Mendelyeev was born in Tobolsk. At 16 he was taken by his mother to St. Petersburg to seek higher education. He entered the Pedagogical Institute where his father had also studied. In 1856 he took a degree in chemistry and in 1859 he was sent abroad for two years for further training. He returned to St. Petersburg in 1861 as Professor of Chemistry.
3. In 1868 Mendelyeev began to write a great textbook of chemistry, known in its English translation as the "Principles of Chemistry". In compiling this he tried to find some system of classifying the elements – some sixty in all then known – whose properties he was describing. This led him to formulate the Periodic Law, which earned him lasting international fame. He presented it verbally to the Russian Chemical Society in October 1868 and published it in February 1869.
4. In this paper he set out clearly his discovery that if the elements are arranged in order of their atomic weights, chemically related elements appear at regular intervals. The greatness of Mendelyeev's achievement lies in the fact that he had discovered a generalization that not only unified an enormous amount of existing information but pointed the way to further progress. Mendelyeev created the system of classifying chemical elements.

1. Powell was a prominent English scientist noted for his techniques and discoveries in particle physics. He was also deeply concerned with problems relating to the social responsibility of scientists. Powell was a leader in the World Federation of Scientific Workers in the mid-1950s and was a founder of the Pugwush Conferences on Science and World Affairs in 1957. As a public man and in his published articles Powell stressed the perils of destructive weapons and the need for international cooperation.
2. Powell was born in December 1903 in England. His parents were poor and they were determined to give their children a good education to increase their opportunities for a better life. In 1921 Powell won a scholarship of one of the colleges at Cambridge which he graduated in 1925 with first-class honours in science. He started his science career at the Cavendish laboratory headed by Ernest Rutherford. After gaining his scientific degree at Cambridge in 1928 Powell accepted a position at the new Physics laboratory in the University of Bristol. Powell spent the rest of his career there advancing to professor in 1948 and director of the laboratory in 1964.
3. In 1947 Powell Bristol group identified a new particle in the cosmic radiation. Powell and other two scientists discovered the π-meson and demonstrated that this subnuclear particle was produced directly in nuclear reactions and rapidly decayed in flight, producing the μ-meson. The discovery solved a complicated scientific problem and helped open a new era of particle physics.
4. Powell continued to develop and apply the photographic method of Bristol. His laboratory became the source of new experimental discoveries in meson physics and an international training centre for physicists of many countries. In 1950 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for his development of the photographic method and his meson discoveries.

It’s 8.15 in the morning and Manuela Garcia is on her way to college in New York City. She is sitting on the Number 7 train and doing her homework. Chinese women are sitting next to her, they are chatting in Chinese. An old woman gets on the train; she is wearing a sari and reading a book in Hindu. At Jackson Heights the old woman gets off. It’s raining outside and Manuela can see Indian and Pakistani shops in the street below.
Welcome to the International Express, the most international train journey in the world. Every day some of New York’s three million immigrants take Number 7 train from Queens to Manhattan and each stop is like a different country. Get off at Flushing station and experience China, go to Corona and you’re in Mexico, the next stop is India at Jackson Heights. Many people are from Latin America, Eastern Europe, Africa or Asia. If you listen carefully, you can hear more than 100 different languages.
Why is this train so popular? A hundred years ago, most immigrants lived in Manhatten, but in 1910 Manhattan was overcrowded and life was very difficult. Then in1917, things improved, thanks to a new train to suburbs called Queens. Immigrants moved out of the city because there was more space in Queens, but they could still get to work in Manhatten.
These first immigrants came to New York to escape from poverty and war, and to have a better life. Today, people come for the same reasons. Manuela Garcia’s family is typical. Her father, Tomas, came from Mexico in 1986 and sold tacos from a small food stall next to Corona station. Tomas got through hard times, saved his money and bought a bakery. Today the jukebox there plays Mexican songs and satellite TV shows Mexican TV programs. “We are proud of our culture, but the bakery is not just for Mexicans”, says Tomas. “We have Polish and Turkish customers, too. We all get on with each other.”
The train speeds past LaGuardia airport as the rain stops and the sun comes out. Manuela looks out of the window and watches the planes take off. People are getting away to experience the world. Manuela smiles. She doesn’t need to go to faraway countries - the world is right there on the Number 7 train.

Going to Extremes
John Hancock reports on the history of some of your favorite extreme sports.
Whether it’s a jaw-dropping move on a skateboard or the raw speed of BMX there is no doubt that extreme sports have taken off in a big way over the last twenty-five years. Some need snow, some need wheels but they all share an element of danger, usually combined with acrobatic stunts.
ESPN, the American TV sports network, organized the first Extreme Games (now the X Games) in 1995 and coined the phrase ‘extreme sports’. This is partly because they are often considered to be different from older, established sports. However, some older, more traditional sports, such as freestyle skiing, skydiving, surfing and water skiing, are also sometimes considered extreme sports.
Extreme sports have also been characterized as ‘alternative sports’. Several of the sports that fall into this category have also been known as ‘outlaw sports’ because they were banned in many areas for being too dangerous. Also, many of the athletes have adopted alternative fashions and have seen themselves as outside the usual sporting world.
Many extreme sports are in fact new versions of older sports, often made possible by technological changes or improvements in equipment. For example, BMX racing and mountain biking are both based on cycling. In-line skating is a form of roller-skating.
For the most part, extreme sports originated as recreational activities for the individuals, but often in a group context. As they have become competitive, extreme sports have been at least partly absorbed into the mainstream, although snowboarding is still the only extreme sport to have become an Olympic event.
One of the most spectacular extreme sports is BMX. There are two main forms, BMX racing, which takes place on a dirt track of about 300 to 400 meters with a series of jumps, and freestyle BMX, involving stunts and
tricks. The sport has come a long way since a group of kids first started organizing races at Palms Park, Santa Monica, California, back in 1969. Fans of motocross, but too young to ride motorbikes, they named their sport ‘pedal cross’. They couldn’t have known what they were starting. Races quickly got bigger and the sport became known as BMX, which stands for ‘bicycle motocross’. The first American national championship was held in 1974 and the first magazine devoted to the sport appeared the same year. It went from strength to strength throughout the eighties and nineties and today there are over 50 national BMX organizations round the world.
Another popular extreme sport is in-line skating, with around 30 million skaters worldwide. In-line skates are generally assumed to be very new and modern, but actually all roller skates were in-line from the first known pair in 1716 until 1863. It was then that James Plimpton invented a skate with for wheels in a rectangular arrangement. In 1966, the original in-line skates returned, but it wasn’t until 1980 that two ice hockey-playing brothers, Scott and Brennan Olson of Minneapolis, realized that in-line skates could be used for training and practice when there was no ice. They started to make their own skates, selling them to friends, and eventually set up their own company, Rollerblade, to market them. They were so successful that in-line skates are often known simply as ‘Rollerblades’.
As competitive sport, in-line skating is actually several sports. There are in-line versions of the traditional roller skating events: speed skating, artistic (figure) skating, and roller hockey. However, the best-known and most popular of the competitive sports is aggressive in-line skating, also known as ‘aggro’. Athletes would show off their skills for the people watching to copy. There are two events, street and vert (short for vertical). In street competitions, skaters perform tricks while jumping over boxes, ramps, and rails, while in vert they do a 60-second routine of tricks and stunts in a half-pipe, like that used in skateboarding and snowboarding.

The big problem is that what we like and cherish is constantly changing. Much has already changed. There is no denying that. However, as our environment changes, so does the need to become increasingly aware of the problems that surround it. With a massive influx of natural disasters, warming and cooling periods, different types of weather patterns and much more, people need to be aware of what types of environmental problems our planet is facing.
Global warming has become an undisputed fact about our current livelihoods; our planet is warming up and we are definitely part of the problem. However, this isn’t the only environmental problem that we should be concerned about. All across the world, people are facing a wealth of new and challenging environmental problems every day. Some of them are small and only affect a few ecosystems, but others are drastically changing the landscape of what we already know.
Our planet is poised at the brink of a severe environmental crisis. Climate change, ozone layer depletion, waste disposal, - are only a few of the current problems that make us vulnerable to disasters and tragedies, now and in the future. Unless we address the various issues prudently and seriously we are surely doomed for disaster.

Another thing you can do to eat healthier is buying from a local butcher. Then you can know that it is not from a major meatpacking company. This proves that not all healthy food is more expensive.
Another component to being healthy is exercise. It takes exercise to maintain a healthy body. You should exercise daily, even if it is just for an hour. Exercising keeps the body in shape and youthful. It helps metabolism. People who exercise also have good strength and are able to perform physical activity for a good amount oftime.
Exercise is also proven to produce endorphins that make you feel better. Some people claim they are too busy to exercise, but there are some simple ways that exercise can be incorporated into a busy life. Some examples are going on walks, pushing children in a stroller, doing pushups and sit ups at home, and stretching. Exercising can be fun if you make it, and anyone can do it without a gym membership.
Being healthy is also about the choices you make. If you put drugs and alcohol into your body on a regular basis then you are abusing your body. Alcohol is full of empty calories that cause weight gain. This is not a healthy choice.
Having a healthy lifestyle is what you make it. It is not as hard and expensive as people say. It is just people having to change habits and get used to eating healthier. Eating healthy, sometimes taking vitamin supplements and exercising are all part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

UK Higher Education System
The largest group of higher education qualifications is bachelor’s degrees. Programmes leading to a bachelor’s degree are normally of three or four years’ duration for full-time students. A three-year course is more common, also there are four-year programmes for languages and for ‘sandwich’ courses that include a year abroad or a work experience year. Most, but not all, higher education institutions (HEIs) use credit-based systems in the design and management of curricula.
Degree awarding institutions are responsible for the design of their own programmes and awards. The number of different courses offered is very high though the number has reduced in recent years. Programmes typically focus on a particular subject area, but there are also combined studies programmes involving two, or possibly three, specializations. Institutions which were originally set up as, for example, institutes of technology, but which subsequently gained university title, tend to retain a strong focus on their original specialism.
Teaching methods are decided by the individual teacher, department, faculty or institution, or a combination of these. Most courses involve both formal lectures and less formal seminars, in which students are encouraged to participate and lead discussions. Certain courses require practical sessions such as work in a laboratory for science subjects and oral classes for foreign languages.
Distance learning is increasingly available. The Open University admitted its first students in 1971 and is now a major provider of distance learning and the UK’s largest university in terms of student numbers. Other institutions also increasingly provide courses on this basis.

The University of London
The University of London is the third oldest university in England founded by Royal Charter on 28 November 1836. It has expanded and changed since then and now is a federal University, comprising 18 Colleges and a number of academic Institutes. Thus, students study at a College or an Institute. In 1878 it became the first university in the UK to admit women to its degrees. In 1880 four women passed the BA examination and in 1881 two women obtained a BSc. By 1895 over 10 per cent of the graduates were women and by 1900 the proportion had increased to 30 per cent.
