Rice
Rice is life for millions of people around the world. It is the most important food for a 50 % of the world’s population. Almost every country has rice in their diet. Europeans don’t eat much rice, perhaps three kilograms per year. But in Myanmar, for example, each person eats half a kilogram of rice every day. Rice and fish is a popular combination in many Asian countries; rice and vegetables are important dishes in the Middle East and Southern Europe; and rice and beans are very popular in Latin America (in Colombia it is the national food).
Every year the world produces more than 500 million tones because it grows almost everywhere. You can grow rice on wet land and dry land, in tropical rainforests and in deserts. Scientists think that there are more than 140,000 different types of rice in the world. Rice also has lots of uses. You can make paper, wine, bread, beer, sweets, cosmetics and even toothpaste with rice.
Rice is in danger in many parts of the world, because of wars, environmental problems and pollution. Many of the poorest people in the world need rice to survive. For these reasons, the United Nations declared 2004 the International Year of Rice and started many development projects connected to rice production and distribution. These programmes continue today.

Sugar and starch
Among common carbohydrates are sugar and starch. Although these substances differ widely from one another in properties and constitution, they show a very definite point of resemblance. They are all composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, and the hydrogen and oxygen are always in the same ratio to one another as in water, i.e., two of hydrogen to one of oxygen.
There is hardly a plant that doesn’t contain either sugar or starch. The sugars and starches are among our most common foods.
Our ordinary everyday life leads us to think that there is only one sugar that we use as a sweetening agent for tea. In fact there are many sugars, they are glucose, fructose and galactose. Glucose or grape-sugar is found in large quantities in grapes. Fructose occurs with glucose in the juice of sweet fruits and in honey.

Pizza
Everybody loves pizza. Nobody ‘invented’ pizza, but 2000 years ago flat bread (like a pizza base) was popular in Egypt, Greece and Rome. Naples is the home of pizza.
Tomatoes arrived in Italy in the 16th century from Mexico and Peru. Mozzarella cheese comes from buffalo milk, and arrived from Indian the 18th century. The oldest pizzeria in Naples opened in 1830 and is still in business today.
In 1889 Queen Marguerite of Italy visited Naples, and somebody made her a special pizza in the colors of the Italian flag. There was white mozzarella, red tomato sauce and green basil. Today Pizza Marguerite is the classic pizza.
Italian immigrants introduced pizza to the USA. The first pizzeria opened in New York in 1895. In the 1950s and 1960s pizza restaurants opened everywhere in the USA. Pizza is a good fast food. You can buy frozen pizzas, and you can get take-away pizzas. Many companies deliver pizzas to your home.
You can find pizza nearly everywhere in the world. You can put anything on a pizza. In Britain you can find pizzas with Bolognese sauce. In Japan, sweet corn is a popular topping and Idaho pizza has potatoes on it. In a modern pizza restaurant there at usually something for everybody.

Food, Dangerous Food
Britain is the proud holder of the title for the fattest European nation, with 17 percent of men and 20 percent of women considered to be clinically obese.
Thirsty? Tired? Reach for a can of fizzy drink and feel the buzz. We all do it, but for many English school kids, this is breakfast! More than 50,000 8–10 year-olds miss food in the morning and arrive at school tired, empty and irritable. And what are the prospects for healthy eating at school? Many schools now have a choice. And when the bell goes, they opt for pizza and chips instead of salad and fish. When you’re still young, you feel immortal, untouched by ‘adult’ concerns of obesity and heart disease. The Heart Foundation has just launched a campaign to show that bad habits formed when we’re young are often the root causes of heart problems when we’re older.
Modern eating habits are seriously destructive. Today’s children are more at risk of developing osteoporosis, heart and respiratory diseases and some forms of cancer than their parents and grandparents. They also face the dilemmas of eating geneticallymodified food (GMOs) or organic – an increasingly popular option in Britain.

Jewelry
The art of jewelry-making originated in prehistoric times when primitive people used objects from the animal world – such as horn, shell, and feathers – to adorn themselves. Cave paintings and carvings show figures decorated with bracelets, necklaces and headdresses.
13 Probably the most widely used and highly prized material for jewelry-making is gold. Gold sheets can be embossed, engraved, pressed, or pierced into decorative forms, and gold wire can be used to join jewels together or to make chains. Other metals commonly used for jewelry-making are silver and platinum. Nonprecious metals such as copper and steel have also been used .Precious and semiprecious stones are the other most commonly used components of jewelry. Common techniques used to decorate pieces of jewelry include enamellings and stone-cutting. The nobility and the more affluent among the middle classes bought and wore jewelry.

The cook
I think I’ve always been interested in food.
My grandparents (on my mother’s side) lived in a huge old manor house in Lincolnshire and they had a wonderful cook. She made fantastic standard English food: her roast beef and Yorkshire pudding was out of this world. I used to love going down to the kitchen and watching her work, and I picked up a lot of cooking tips from her. I realized that I wanted to be a cook when I was about 12. I went to a boarding school and when other boys chose to do sport, I chose cookery. By the time I was 15. I had taken over the cooking at home for my parent’s dinner parties, and I had started to make up my own recipes. I knew my parents would not approve of cooking as a career, so I decided to introduce them slowly to the idea. I told them that I wanted to do a cookery course for fun, and I went for a month to a hotel in Torquay. I enjoyed it so much. I knew I couldn’t put off telling my parents any longer, so I brought the subject up one night over dinner. At first there was silence, and then my father asked me why. I explained that cooking was like painting a picture or writing a book. Every meal was an act of creation. I could see that my father was not convinced, but he didn’t get angry, he just patted me on the shoulder and smiled.
My mother kissed me. And now that I have opened my own restaurant, I think they are very proud of me. However, my grandfather (on my father's side) is not so kind, he thinks I'm mad to have given up farming.

Leather
Leather making is the science of using acids, bases, salts, enzymes and tannins to dissolve fats and nonfibrous proteins and strengthen the bonds between the collagen fibres. The modern commercial leather making process involves three basic phases: preparation for tanning, tanning and processing tanned leather. As a preliminary step, a hide must be carefully skinned and protected both in storage and transportation before reaching the tannery. At the tannery the hide is soaked to remove all water-soluble substances and restore it to its original shape and softness. After the basic tanning process is completed, the pelts are ready for processing, the final phase in leather production. The tanned pelt is first thoroughly dried and then dyed to it the appropriate color : common methods include drum dyeing, spraying, brush dyeing and staining. The leather is then dried, stretched and softened, and the grain surface is coated to give it additional resistance to abrasion, cracking, peeling, water, heat and cold.
