I. Перепишите следующие предложения. Определите по грамматическим признакам, какой частью речи являются слова, оформленные окончанием -s и какую функцию это окончание выполняет, т. е. служит ли оно:
а) показателем 3-го лица ед. ч. глагола в Present Simple;
б) показателем притяжательного падежа имени существительного;
в) признаком множественного числа имени существительного.
Письменно переведите предложения на русский язык:
1. Numerals are signs for graphic representation of numbers.
2. This system’s drawback is that it’s not suitable for rapid calculations.
3. A small dot on CD-disk represents the digit 1, and the absence of a dot signifies the digit 0.
II. Перепишите следующие предложения и письменно переведите их, обращая внимание на особенности перевода на русский язык определений, выраженных именем существительным.
1. Mr. Brown began his career at a small shoe workshop where he gained useful experience.
2. The manager knows different aspects of the film production process such as planning and equipment rental.
3. John is a team player because he enjoys the exchange of ideas.
III. Перепишите предложения, содержащие разные формы сравнения и письменно переведите их на русский язык.
1. The earlier you get up, the more you can do.
2. The narrowest part of the English Chanel is called the Straight of Dover.
3. The population of the Russian Federation is almost twice as large as the population of Great Britain.
IV. Перепишите и письменно переведите предложения на русский язык, обращая внимание на перевод неопределенных и отрицательных местоимений.
1. Some regions of England are famous for the production of machinery, coal, motor cars and chemicals.
2. Are there any goods of this kind at the warehouse?
3. We have no exact figures for population in London for the last year.
V. Перепишите следующие предложения. Определите видовременные формы глагола и укажите их инфинитив; письменно переведите предложения на русский язык.
1. Frank Seiberling founded The Goodyear Tire Company in 1898 and became famous throughout the world.
2. The company has built airships and provided the U.S. navy with a unique means of observation to the convoy’s ships.
3. They are trying to make a certain agreement on their merger.
VI. Перепишите и письменно переведите текст на русский язык.
Economy of the USA
The United States of America is a highly developed industrialized country. Shipbuilding, electronics, automobile industry, aircraft industry, space research are highly developed in the States.
The United States has a lot of mineral deposits or resources such as coal, gold, silver, copper, lead and zink. The south, especially Texas is rich in oil. The coalfields of Pennsylvania are rich in coal.
Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska is the richest farming region of America and it is known as the Corn Belt. The land is fertile and well watered. They grow mostly corn and wheat there. Much livestock is also raised here.
There is a lot of fruit raising area. For example, California oranges, grapefruit, lemons, as well as other fruits, wines and vegetables are shipped all over the States and to other parts of the world. The most important crops grown in the States are also tobacco, soybeans, peanuts, grapes and many others.
